What is the role of the International Court of Justice in the contemporary world and what is the Impact of its recent decisions on international politics? This event offers a rare chance to hear from a distinguished member of the ICJ on current key and most pressing legal issues in international relations, including:
- The ICJ Judgment in the case of Ukraine v. Russia, delivered on February 2nd
- followed by an in-depth discussion of the Court’s recent decisions concerning Palestine, including provisional measures and the advisory opinion on the Occupied Palestinian Territory
These insights will be set against the backdrop of the ICJ’s increasingly demanding agenda, highlighting its crucial role as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.

The event will commence with Judge Aurescu's opening remarks and will be chaired by our Senior Researcher, Veronika Bílková. The session will conclude with an opportunity for the audience to engage directly with Judge Aurescu during an open Q&A.
Speaker:
Judge Bogdan Aurescu is a distinguished jurist and diplomat, currently serving as a Judge at the International Court of Justice. Appointed to the ICJ on February 6th, 2024, Judge Aurescu has an extensive background in international law and diplomacy, having previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania. His career includes significant contributions to international legal scholarship, particularly in the areas of international dispute resolution and the law of the sea. Judge Aurescu has also played a pivotal role in several high-profile cases before international courts, bringing a wealth of experience and insight to his current position on the ICJ.
