Russian military aggression, invasion, and war in Ukraine is a turning point for politics, economics, society, and will undoubtedly have long-lasting consequences for peace on the European continent.

For Moldova, Ukraine’s neighbour, this war brings forward two of the main vulnerabilities that pose challenges to its existence as a state: the dependency on Russian gas and the Transnistrian breakaway region, which hosts Russian military troops and the largest ammunition depot in Eastern Europe.

For the European Union, this war saw an ‘awakening’ of the EU as a regional security actor and an altered position of member-states on Russia. But will this lead to the EU becoming a security guarantor for Eastern Europe, which, in the EU’s normative vein, implies offering a membership perspective not only to Ukraine but also to its neighbour, the Republic of Moldova?

Dr Dorina Baltag, a researcher at the Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance, Loughborough University London, is an EU foreign policy researcher at the Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance. Her research covers democratisation in the Eastern Partnership and EU diplomacy related topics.
