Mediterranean region
The Mediterranean is a region that surrounds the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean region thus includes territories in Europe, Africa and the Levant. The region is extremely diverse in terms of culture, politics, economics and religion, as it is mostly Muslim in the south and east, and Christian in the north. Politically sensitive issues in the region include the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, migration issues and the tensions between Turkey and Greece. The Mediterranean has brought the world democracy, the Olympic Games and Arabic numerals, among other things.
