Day 1 15/09/2022
Welcome Speech and Introduction
Opening Guest Lecture
The environment is degrading in developing countries, with adverse consequences to the health and wellbeing of the most vulnerable who depend on natural resources and are exposed to environmental risks. This talk will suggest that the dominant approach reduces environmental policy choices to optimal design in idealised conditions and omits the compatibility of interventions with the wider institutional framework and the challenges that the local context poses for implementation. It will, then, illustrate how and why carbon markets in Asia diverge from the EU ETS, why micro-finance in Bangladesh does not live up to the standard of developed insurance and financial markets, and how forms of government differently shape climate policy networks and governance in the land use sector in Indonesia and Brazil.
