Nikola Schmidt působí v Ústavu mezinárodních vztahů jako seniorní výzkumný pracovník a vedoucí Centra governance nových technologií. Předmětem jeho odborného zájmu je vztah technologií, mezinárodních vztahů a forem globálního vládnutí, dále role expertů v politickém rozhodování v oblastech vesmírné a kybernetické bezpečnosti, klimatické změně a jiných planetárních výzev, jejichž politické rozhodování stojí na expertních a vědeckých znalostech.

Vystudoval sociologii na Univerzitě Karlově, mezinárodní vztahy na Metropolitní univerzitě (Mgr.) a na Fakultě sociálních věd Univerzity Karlovy získal doktorát z mezinárodních vztahů se specializací na bezpečnostní studia (PhD.). V roce 2015 se zúčastnil projektu planetární obrany spolufinancovaného agenturami NASA a ESA, což vedlo k několikaletému multidisciplinárnímu výzkumnému projektu planetární obrany, těžby ve vesmíru a role zlomových výzkumných projektů pro Českou republiku V této souvislosti studuje stigmatizaci vědeckého vědění ve vztahu k epistemické a politické autoritě. Editoval dvě knihy pro nakladatelství Springer studujících planetární obranu a koncept kosmopolitně zodpovědného státu v souvislosti s vesmírnou politikou. Publikuje v časopisech Nature Communications, Acta Astronautica, Space Policy, New Space, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Alternatives a nakladatelstvích Springer nebo Oxford University Press. Působí jako lektor na Fakultě sociálních studií Masarykovy Univerzity v Brně.
